HPO Axis
Your hormones aren’t just about your ovaries… it’s a full team effort.
Meet the HPO axis:
(Hypothalamus → Pituitary → Ovaries)
This is the communication loop that controls your cycle, ovulation and hormone production. When it’s flowing well, everything feels easier. When it’s not… you may experience irregular periods, missing cycles, PCOS, fertility issues, heightened menopause symptoms and hormonal chaos.
One of my favourite ways to support this in clinic is with an HPO blend
A combination of Hypothalamus, Pituitary and Ovary (Oophorinum) in one formula.
Understanding the HPO Axis
The HPO axis is the communication loop between the brain and ovaries that governs hormones, ovulation and the menstrual cycle.
At the top of this system sits the hypothalamus. It signals the pituitary gland to release FSH and LH, which then stimulate the ovaries to produce oestrogen and progesterone. When this axis is working well, cycles are regular, ovulation occurs smoothly, and hormones feel balanced.
When it’s not, we start to see issues like irregular cycles, missing periods, PCOS, fertility challenges and perimenopausal symptoms.
A homeopathic perspective
In homeopathy, we often work “upstream”.
Rather than only supporting the ovaries, we can use sarcodes to gently stimulate communication along the entire axis, helping the body regulate itself more effectively.
Key sarcodes within the HPO axis
Hypothalamus (Hypothalamus sarcode)
This sits right at the top of the chain. Clinically, it’s used when the body isn’t signalling properly.
Think:
Irregular or absent cycles
PCOS presentations
Perimenopause
Appetite dysregulation and poor satiety
Hot flushes (the hypothalamus governs temperature regulation)
It’s also a beautiful remedy to consider in cases of high stress, addiction tendencies (food, alcohol, overeating), and neurological presentations such as autism and epilepsy. The hypothalamus plays a role in oxytocin production, which can be relevant in certain emotional and developmental pictures.
Pituitary (Pituitary sarcode)
The master gland that drives hormone production.
Think:
Weepiness, anxiety, obsessive thoughts
Delayed development or growth
Primary amenorrhoea
Urinary issues, including bedwetting
Hormonal insufficiency
It’s often indicated when there’s a sense that the body simply isn’t “switching on” hormonally.
Ovary (Oophorinum)
This is the end organ of the axis, made from ovarian tissue.
Think:
Fertility challenges
Menopause and hot flushes
Acne and hormonal skin issues
Ovarian cysts or growths
Irregular or painful cycles
Bringing it all together
The beauty of working with the HPO axis in homeopathy is that we’re not forcing hormones or overriding the system.
We’re supporting communication.
By gently stimulating the hypothalamus, pituitary and ovaries, we help the body find its rhythm again. Cycles regulate, symptoms ease, and the system begins to function as it was designed to.
Because your body isn’t broken. It just needs the right signals.
